Spirit papers came in many colors, but the purple colored paper is most commonly used in tattooing. The transfer of an image occurs via a "Leuco Dye reaction" in which the template image absorbs infrared light and triggers a light-induced chemical reaction in the pigmented coating , transferring the pigment to the acceptor paper. The copy that is produced is often referred to as the "Spirit Master" and is used as a stencil for tattooing!
The THERMOFAX machine was a 3M device used for creating thermal image copies.
